Gossip Girl 2×14 – In the Realm of the Basses

January 10, 2009

Gossip Girl finally returns, and what an episode this is~

Lots of new things in the new year – there’s a new Bass in town, a new Humphrey-Van Der Woodsen on the horizon, Jenny and her new leaf, and Dan-Serena are back together again. Well that’s sorta old…

Still, Ed Westwick and Leighton Meester as Chuck & Blair, Awesome~

So Rufus has been going around looking for his love child with Lily, who refuses to tell him where he is. Along the way, Dan finds out the ultimate truth from Chuck (that was a nice and rare decent Chuck moment) – that he shares a sibling with Serena, who has thankfully dumped icky Aaron Rose in Buenos Ares. But as Chuck says, sharing a sibling, kind of a deal breaker, and that’s coming from The Chuck Bass…

Poor Dan, you know Serena’s going to be pissed with him for not telling her, and you know that this time, it’s probably finally over between them, which kinda sucks because annoying as Dan can be sometimes, I did like Dan-Serena because I thought they balanced each other out ultimately. Serena spends most of this episode happy and clueless. Poor chick’s about to find out she’s Dan’s distant relation (are they half siblings? Something removed? Never quite knew how that worked).

I also wonder how Eric is going to take this? He spends most of this episode as Jenny’s other half (will she convert him from his lovely gayness? They do have couple possibility…) in her Save Nelly Yuki campaign and also sadly gets rebuffed by Chuck, though less cruelly than at the funeral. MORE ERIC PLEASE. At least he’s wasn’t the love child, even with suspiciously Rufus-looking hair roots…

Jenny Humphrey goes back to school as any sensible 15 year old would, and she’s looking to keep a low profile… not! Her first day back and she’s campaigning against her former group – Blair’s cronies. She recognizes her former sad self in the much bullied Nelly Yuki and stands up to the Mean Girls.

So the Mean Girls hierachy:

Top of the chain is Queen Bee  Blair Waldorf, though with her society aspirations and Chuck in trouble, she can’t even bring herself to care about these petty matters anymore. Serena is honorary VP, in that no one messes with her if she does pull rank, but she defers to Blair out of loyalty and love and she’s way past all this. Next in line is Penelope, by virtue of her cattiness perhaps? She’s the one in control when Blair’s not there. Isabel is clueless and safely in the middle, probably because she doesn’t aspire to lead, unlike Hazel, who’s a total sad wannabe and not strong enough to overpower Penelope. That leaves Nelly Yuki, current bottom of the heap now that Little J and Little Elise have departed.

Anyway Jenny succeeds in overpowering the Mean Girls by way of blackmail, but it turns out Nelly Yuki was just playing her to move up in the ranks – with Jenny on top, that puts Nelly in 2nd place and probably will let her take revenge on Penelope for all her shit, but the genius makes a miscalculation, Jenny wants no part of the clique thing… or does she? It seems to me she’s realized how easy it is to outsmart the Mean Girls, and that means she’s either going for the Queen (which was done last season, so maybe not) or for the kill – take down the Mean Girls completely.

And Blair, oh Blair Waldorf you poor messed up girl. She’s lost Chuck and is trying to move on – by joining a new clique of mean gi… women, the Colony Club, who turn out to be just as bitchy as the high school mean girls clique that she’s trying to get past, so when they insult all that is dear to her (Serena & Chuck), she dumps their sorry old asses with a smile (and check out Dorota’s smirk as she ‘gets their coats’).

She goes running back to Chuck, who’s stayed a mess since disappearing on Blair – in an opium den in Thailand (they still have those things?). His uncle Jack, Bart’s younger brother, makes his first ever appearance and drags Chuck all the way back to New York. Chuck, still in a stupor of grief, lights a joint on school grounds and nearly gets expelled despite Blair and Jack’s best efforts. He buys back Victrola and throws a bash, rejecting Eric and Blair coldly, and heads up for a drunken walk on the roof. That was a pretty scary scene, but you know they ain’t gonna let the Basshole bite it so abruptly! He drunkenly raves, but Blair manages to persuade him down and he holds her hand, burying his face in her shoulder (AW-NESS).

But the biggest reveal of the night, has Blair Waldorf hooked herself another Bass?? Nothing’s quite set in stone, though it’s clear Blair doesn’t want Chuck to ever find out, but you just know he will eventually. PLEASE don’t say she slept with Jack Bass, that would be rather icky. Understandable, but ugh. Was that what she wanted to tell Serena before she got interrupted by Dan? OMG please don’t hurt my Chair/Bluck anymore!

Overall, Gossip Girl in the New Year, still awesome! Next episode should be good…

  1. Great episode! I’m so thrilled that Aaron’s gone that anything would have pleased me, but yeah, Blair and Chuck brought it big time. But then, they always do don’t they?

Like you, I kinda like Serena/Dan together despite his judgmental attitude toward her. I guess I prefer him with her than anyone else, that’s probably more apt. And since Aaron was the only other guy she’s hooked up with since the show started, yeah, Dan is the far more preferable choice. I imagine the sibling sharing will indeed tear them apart, yet again.

Little J was more likable than she’s been in a long time as well. I was tired of her attempting to play Queen Bee and playing the whipping dog too. I like her and Eric together and agree, more screen time please!

  2. No more Aaron! I wonder if he got cut because he was unpopular or because the actual real life Aaron Rose complained he was defamatory~

Eric is good for Jenny because he tempers her; he rolls with her crazy ideas but he stops her from going overboard, so they do make a good pairing. But didn’t he get back together with his bf? Wonder what happened with that…

  3. Hee, I don’t know but he was terribly cast and I’m glad he’s gone.

I think Eric did go off with his boyfriend at the funeral or something, but I don’t know if they got back together or not. I really like Eric and wish they would feature him more than they do. You’re right, he does temper Jenny nicely and makes her more likable, I was hating her most of last and this year.
