Leverage Profile – Eliot Spencer

August 2, 2009

Name: Eliot Spencer (Played by Christian Kane)

Role: Retrieval Specialist, Muscle, Hitter, Back Up (The unfailable escape route when things go bad – KFM)

Physical Attributes:

Caucasian Male / Long shoulder length blonde hair / Well built frame / Wears glasses on occasion (gets new ones in 3×01 – The Jailhouse Job) / Early 30s (KFM)

Here’s a Season 1 character video recap of Eliot from TNT:

More about Eliot Spencer below:

Special Abilities:

  • A Retrieval Specialist is someone who finds things which are hard to find and transports them any way possible (DVDs)
  • Unparallelled hand-to-hand fighting ability – able to drop 4 armed guards in the time it takes Hardison to drop a bag (1×01).
  • Extensive knowledge of guns and fighting style – able to identify mercernaries/terrorists by the sound of their weapons fired and a Force Recon Marine by the style of his knife thrust (1×02), as well as ex-CIA just by their stance (2×06). Very dangerous with guns, taking out  more than 10 armed bodyguards with just 2 guns and has a very quick draw (3×15).
  • Very handy with knives, whether it’s for cutting through 8 Yakuza in 4 seconds or an onion. Prides himself as a good cook (1×07). Also has dealt with cleaver-wielding triad members in the past (2×10, KFM) Apparently this knife and culinary love all stemmed from a very booby and hot home economics teacher back in high school (3×02)
  • Hardison taught him how to photoshop his face on an FBI pass (1×07). Hardison also taught him some minor internet hacking tricks (2×05)
  • Strategic – able to plan/predict the best possible way the team or other people might take out someone else(1×08)
  • Plays chess, apparently (1×11)
  • Skilled in Mixed Martial Arts (2×02), gives Parker some tips as well as teaching some private school kids during Physical Education class (2×04)
  • Quite well travelled – has been in countries like Myanmar (1×13, 2×07), Vietnam (1×01), Serbia (1×01), Berlin (1×02), Ukraine (1×07), Croatia (1×07), Pakistan (2×01), Japan (3×02), Lebanon (3×07), North Korea (3×11)…
  • Is wanted in 5 countries – one being Myanmar (1×13). 3 countries have a bounty on his head and 1 has issued a fatwa on him (3×06).
  • Speaks Hebrew (2×07), Italian (3×08) and Arabic (3×12), and understands Iranian as well (3×02)
  • Knowledge of bombs and defusing them, as he coaches Sophie when she is threatened by one in her hands (2×07). He also recognizes and knows how to make bombs out of fertilizer and molasses (3×07).
  • Almost supernaturally accurate throwing ability, whether it be pebbles (2×01) or darts (2×11, 3×11)
  • Has the leadership knack, as he takes point during the Zanzibar Market Job (2×12) when Nate is kidnapped. The other team members submit to his lead quite easily
  • Very familiar with hostage situations, as he’s able to list out the 3 types of calls one can get after the first hostage call (2×12)
  • Doesn’t like Baseball, but turns out to be pretty good at it, as he wins the Boston Beavers game with a home runner! (2×14) Was once a football player in high school (3×02).
  • Familiar with the 9 places professionals will use to deliver an injection to make a murder look like a heart attack – Eliot spots the tell tale under the fingernail (3×05)
  • Sings country music well enough to not need autotune and catch a music exec’s attention (3×06)! Though he got nervous about it beforehand enough that Parker startled him for the first time ever, but he quickly catches on and seems to like signing autographs.
  • Was once working for the United States government, possibly as some sort of Special Forces Agent, as he tells the client that he once swore an oath to them (3×06). KFM has also mentioned that Eliot has a past tied to the US military, which would explain his expansive knowledge.
  • Has very good sense of direction and spatial awareness, as he is able to calculate where they are and what direction they should head in even when he’s imprisoned in a van (3×07)
  • Knows how to throw trackers off his scent, by rubbing skunkweed on his clothing and leaving blood off the trail (3×07). Claims to have done it while handcuffed to a dead man.
  • Once held the rank of Commander as he was addressed as such by General Flores (3×15)

Quirks:

  • Doesn’t like guns (1×01), because they have a certain range of efficacy (1×04) and always releases the cartridges and safes the gun immediately after disarming his opponents. However, he proves that he is more than efficient with them, killing an entire team of bodyguards by his lonesome (3×15)
  • Not very tech savvy – would rather leave the geek stuff to Hardison, for e.g. he thinks rebooting a system means having to kick it (1×10). He does pick it up some later on, as he’s able to execute computer stuff with some instruction.
  • Has a pretty short temper – it doesn’t take very much to set him off, as Hardison and Parker often enjoy doing.
  • Immense control over his anger, as evident in the Tap Out Job (2×02). It has been implied that Eliot could kill someone if he really wanted to, and has off screen (though according to KFM, the body count was ‘not excessive’) though to date the only time he has killed someone in the Leverage-verse was when he took out the entire warehouse of Moreau’s bodyguards.
  • Recognizes the signs of physical abuse, particularly sympathetic to abused children (2×03) and children from third world countries (3×04, 3×12)
  • Doesn’t own a TV (2×03)
  • Grows his own food because he doesn’t trust outside food (2×06). Doesn’t seem to have stopped him from eating take-out though.
  • Only sleeps 90 minutes a day (2×06)
  • Claustrophobic as a kid, but managed to get over it by locking himself in a woodshed behind his house and spending a couple of nights there. (2×06)
  • Great with the ladies, from mentions of past girlfriends like the neurologist (1×09) and flight attendant (1×08) to seeing him picking up girls (2×01) or charming the ladies (like, all the time) and even making out with a female rival mid-fight (2×07). He accidentally picks up Maggie, Nate’s ex-wife one time (1×12). Gets a bit defensive about his ‘skills’ when Sophie has to coach him on how to charm a lady grifter (1×06).
  • Drives a silver pick-up truck (2×08). Also knows how to ride a motorbike (3×06). Also owns a red car with racing stripes down the middle, which was used in The Boost Job as a race car, though Nate claims it as his because Hardison had transferred the papers to his name for the con. (3×08)
  • Doesn’t like hitting cops (2×09)
  • Carries a pocket knife (2×11)
  • Had a hidden stack of emergency cash in the bottom of Nate’s single sofa seat, the one which he usually sits on, which he takes out for the Bottle Job (2×11)
  • Doesn’t like baseball because you can’t score on defense and thinks it is boring. That changes rapidly when he has to play a baseball player and realizes he’s pretty good at it, and even wins the game for his team, signs autographs and has a rubens sandwich named after him at DJ Philburns. (2×14)
  • Susceptible to Neurolinguistic Programming, as Sophie has him pouring and preparing tea for her with a few strategic squeezes  (3×02)
  • Was a football quarterback in high school. The letter on his jacket is a H, and his number had a 2 in it (3×02). He still enjoys watching football today (1×11) and basketball (2×08).
  • Likes to fish, in the outdoors and not on a computer. (3×07)
  • Hates Beets (3×07)
  • Now owns a Hanzo Samurai sword, given to him by Nate and Sophie for Christmas (3×14)
  • Used to work for Damien Moreau as his head bodyguard (3×15), and is so supernatural that all of Moreau’s bodyguards pull out their guns just upon seeing him and hearing his name. Eliot claims the worst thing he’s ever done in his life was for Moreau, and it is implied that it involved killing a lot of people and their innocent families.
  • Used to have short hair (3×15), but apparently keeps his hair long now to reduce recognition from former foes (KFM)

Relationships:

  • Aimee Martin – Grew up with her (1×07), High School sweetheart, gave her a promise ring but left town 8 years ago when she got married to someone else and remained estranged. Helped her out and patched things back up in The Two-Horse Job (1×03), but remained friends. He considers her his first love (and only to date), and their relationship suffered because he was torn between serving his country and being there for her (3×06)
  • Willie Martin – Father of Aimee’s, calls Eliot for help to retrieve his last surviving horse and take avenge the dead horses when his stable gets burnt down. (1×03)
  • Unknown Nephew – makes mention of a nephew who would love Bibletopia in The Miracle Job (1×04) suggests he has siblings.
  • Unknown Flight Attendant – the reason why he knows that flight attendants always carry an extra change of uniform is because he slept with one before (1×08)
  • Unknown Nerurologist – the reason why he knows how to fake an MRI – by switching the signals from 2 marchines –  is because he dated one before (1×09)
  • Donny – an Irish (I think) Indian friend who he gets to act in a con in The Juror #6 Job (1×11)
  • Randy – a boy he encounters during the Order 23 Job (2×03), whom he instantly identifies as an abused kid. He talks to him a little, and ultimately gets the Boston cop to protect him from his abusive dad.
  • Mikel Diane – ex-Mossad and his female counterpart on the ‘anti-Leverage’ team they encounter on the Two Live Crew Job (2×07). Besides a kick ass fight in their minds and physically, they also end up kissing mid-fight. Her bringing out the handcuffs which Eliot tries to hide from Hardison suggests they might have hooked up. (KFM)
  • Unknown Model(s) – the reason why he knows fashion related stuff like empire waistlines and guyliner. (2×10) Apparently has dated a few and they put on ‘private fashion shows’ for him, though according to KFM, he prefers doctors to models.
  • Unknown Japanese Policewoman – someone Eliot met when he was in Osaka, and apparently also the reason why he knows how to ‘trim a Bonsai’ (3×02)
  • Unknown Home Economics Teacher – his hot, booby teacher is the reason he took HomeEc in high school, even though as a football jock it was not cool to. She seemed pretty into him! (3×02)
  • Jennifer Pearson – FDA Representative whom Eliot has to distract for the con under the cover of being a Pharma Company employee. He feigns interest in her to get her to extend her stay, and is forced to sightsee and shop with her. She dumps him the next day for not being ‘dangerous’ and ‘risky’ enough. (3×05)
  • Cory – a young miner whose father died 2 years ago whom Eliot meets in the Underground Job and takes a shine to. Eliot advises him to take up machinery to go further (3×10)
  • Kate Lynn Gold – an aspiring country music client they help out. Eliot gets close to her and they get intimate after his solo showcase (3×06). However, he declines her offer to join her on the country music stage.
  • Damien Moreau – Employed Eliot as his head henchman, and they were close enough that they address each other on a first name basis (3×15).
  • Chapman – Eliot’s successor as Moreau’s head henchman after Eliot leaves Moreau. Eliot seems surprised that Moreau gave Chapman the job. Chapman tries to get the drop on Eliot after he takes out all of Moreau’s henchmen but Eliot shoots him first. (3×15)

Past Jobs:

  • Present DayHe’s in Berlin after The Nigerian Job (1×01) where he takes out 2 guys and another one with a gun in his face before picking up the phone call from Hardison. Whether it was a job or not is unknown.
  • Present Day – Between S1 and S2, he was in Pakistan doing ‘hinky’ stuff, whether or not he was on the CIA’s side is unknown (2×01). Apparently has some government connection, as implied by KFM.
  • 3 years ag0 – Retrieving a collector’s baseball card in Belgrade, Serbia – took out 8 gunmen, without a gun, whilst sipping a mug of coffee (1×01)
  • 5 years ago – For not delivering the Sapphire Monkey, Eliot was sent by his client Gutman to retrieve the dagger of Aqu’abi from the museum of Boston (3×11), the same item that the rest of the Leverage team was after before they got together. He outsmarted Sophie but was outsmarted in turn by Hardison.
  • 6 years ago (2003) – In Myanmar, which now has a $500,000 bounty on his head (1×13), and also where he was shot in the upper right arm by a sniper who might have been the mercenary Mikel Diane (2×07)
  • 8 years ago – When he dropped off the face of the planet and didn’t contact Aimee, he seemed to be held in some prison, being dragged along and questioned about what he did with a monkey (1×03), which is later revealed to be a Sapphire Monkey in North Korea (3×11). This time frame seems to be about when he liberated Croatia as well (1×07). Also, it appears he was in the employment of the US government during this period (3×06)
  • Unknown – A game of Russian Roulette, which apparently, is not as bad as being stuck watching Sophie perform in her play Death of a Salesman (1×04)
  • Unknown – Vietnam, in a town called Ben Au Zai (sounds like that) where he knew a Chinese Porter called Victor, whom Sophie coincidentally also knows. (1×01)
  • Unknown – He fought The Butcher of Kiev who was armed with a butcher’s knife in front of a burning structure. Eliot managed to break free and hit the right side of The Butcher’s face with a burning plank, scarring his cheek permanently. He encounters The Butcher again during The Wedding Job (1×07) and takes him out with a saucepan, a whisk and the lemon juice and serving tray from his Stuffed Mushrooms appetiser.
  • Unknown – Wanted in 5 different countries, the only one known being Myanmar (1×13)
  • Unknown – Worked as a mercenary for various governments, and has ‘taken lots of jobs standing in embassy basements’ (KFM)
  • Unknown – chased the same thief as Nate in his role as a retrieval specialist, which according to KFM, was how he first came under Nate’s radar.
  • Unknown – took out a Uruguayan Death Squad with a piano wire and… (3×14)
  • Unknown – Was Damien Moreau’s Head Henchman for an undisclosed period of time (3×15). There was a job in Belgrade that Moreau alludes to.
  • Unknown – Was once sent to kill the San Lorenzo Army General. Instead of killing him, he rescues him, and counts that as ‘half a rescue’ (3×16)

The farms are drying up. The only stores are bailsbonds and pawn shops, and there’s nothing they can do about it. So yeah, they get in the ring and try not to let it suffocate them. And it’s about 2 guys beating the crap out of each other.” – 2×02, to Sophie who doesn’t consider MMA a sport.

“You think I’m gonna let that guy kick my ass? I learned a long time ago, you can’t control the violence. I can take the punishment. It’s what I do. What I need to control is not out there. *pat’s chest* It’s here. Always.” – 2×02, to Sophie when she expresses concern about him throwing the fight.

“Listen to me man, say pitchy one more time. Say pitchy one more time and see what happens. I don’t even think that word means what you think it means!” – 3×06, pissed off that Hardison in his role as the producer keeps telling him that he’s being pitchy.

“I got hit by a car!” – 3×08, to Parker, pissed off that she screwed up the con.

“Damn it Hardison!” – something Eliot says all the time and is often mocked, by Hardison himself (3×07) and even by Chaos (3×14)

“If I’m not honest with you, you’re not going to improve.” – 3×11, to the ‘second rate thug’ in a choke hold who was sent to kill him.

“This can go two ways – you can give them to me, and I can stuff you in the trunk of this car, which, by the way, looks pretty comfortable. Not a bad night. Or, you can not give them to me… and I can do exactly what you’d expect a crazy guy in your back seat to do to you. (The doctor hands over his keys) That’s the right choice.” – 3×11, to the actual Dr Wes Abernathy who he hijacks for the con.

“Yeah. You never know if you’re going to have to fight a guy on ice.” – 3×12, when Sophie asks him if he watches hockey fights all alone in his room.

“Hardison, I’m gonna… I got a lump of coal with your name on it!” – 3×14, to Hardison when he laughs at poor Eliot’s predicament as a mall Santa.

Every one of Moreau’s men has innocent blood on their hands, every one of them. Every one of them… are worse than me. You think you know what I’ve done? The worst thing I ever did in my entire life, I did for Damien Moreau. And I… I’ll never be clean of that. – 3×15, to the team when Hardison tells them that he used to work for Moreau. When Parker asks what he did, “Don’t ask me that, Parker. Because if you ask me, I’m gonna tell you. So please don’t ask me.” Poor baby!

“I don’t (like guns)…  [shoots guy] Never said I couldn’t use them.” – 3×15, to Chapman who tries to get the drop on him.

“You’re very good at what you do, but you can’t con a mountain.” – 4×01, to Nate in warning about alcohol withdrawal.

Bonus!

Actor Christian Kane is also the lead singer of a band he started called KANE. Check out the video below, it’s got lotsa pix of Chris Kane now and back in the day (with short hair!). This song was also used in The Two Horse Job (1×03) when Eliot and Aimee talk.

This is the latest song that Christian Kane performed in The Studio Job, where he played a  rising country music star Kenneth Crane and performed his own song titled ‘Thinking of you’.

  1. Love your site. But just want to mention that ‘trimming a bonsai’ was not about actually trimming a tree…. it is a sexual reference.

I want to know if it was scripted or a Kane ad lib

    • oh. my bad! i never knew that~ tsk Eliot!

  2. What and where can I get the black leather motorcycle jacket with the two white stripes on the sleeves worn by Eliot Spencer on Leverage ?

    • I have no idea, but anything on (or taken off) Eliot Spencer is good stuff~

      • He wore that jacket at ConCon and had it on during the photo ops. Let me tell you – it is the softest leather I have ever touched!

  3. Excellent post, thank you for writing it up! Eliot is easily my favourite character in Leverage.

(…BTW, Donnie from The Juror #6 Job is Scottish :D)

  4. 3 years ag0 – Retrieving a collector’s baseball card in Belgrade, Serbia – took out 8 gunmen, without a gun, whilst sipping a mug of coffee (1×01)
He is actually sipping tea, because when Christian read “sipping tea” in the script he tossed it behind his sofa thinking it wasn’t for him. Days later his manager convinced him to read further.

  5. There is a funny thing in 2.09 episode, when Eliot is playing Officer Hilts: he is the only one there who wears hat with BOP written on it, which stays for Bureau of Prisons, of course, but which is also can be read in Russian and then it means “thief”.

  6. Just so you know it isn’t a Chinese porter but the Chinese border.
